Green Roofing

Technically, the term green roofing applies to flattop roofs in urban settings that have been turned into gardens and elevated parks. It is not unusual for green spaces to become gardens, producing vegetables, edible plants and even sustaining small fruit trees. Green roofing takes neglected space and makes it useful. Such parks and gardens provide fantastic insulation from heat and cold, as well as help reduce the problem of urban heating and heat islands.
However, these days, green roofing has a broader definition that encompasses not only garden roofs, but all sorts of eco-friendly options for both residential and commercial buildings. It can refer to the types of materials you use as well as the installation methods and how the roof interacts with the environment.

Materials
According to the National Roofing Contractors Association, business and homeowners are no longer limited to shingle, shake or tile roofing options. New choices include green choices like asphalt shingles, which can be reinforced with organic (wood-based) or fiberglass materials making them better at insulating; metal, in panels and shingles to help shed snow on homes or businesses in mountainous terrain; and synthetic products, many recycled, that simulate other traditional roofing products.
For example, recycled synthetic shingles are becoming more and more popular. Made from recycled plastic or rubber — like old tires or plastic water bottles — mixed with wood waste, these shingles are much the same as the composite decking material that is so popular. The shingles can be pressed into molds to mimic tile, wood shakes, almost anything. These recycled products are not only a green roofing solution, but they are also lighter-weight than many other roofing materials, are UV and fire resistant, as well as long-lasting (some have a lifespan up to 50 years).

Another innovation has taken place in the solar panel industry. Rather than the big bulky panels, solar panels are now being shaped into smaller roofing tiles. The whole system is hooked together and works just like the larger panels.

Installation
One way of going green is to literally plant hundreds of succulents or plants on your roof. However, that’s not the only way. Choosing the right roofing material and installing it correctly is even more important. Poor installation not only causes problems later, but may be allowing heat, cold and moisture into your home or business doubling or even tripling your energy bills.

One option is to select a roofing material that combats the heat, especially here in the Southwest. Built-Up Roofing, Foam, Metal and Single Ply Roofing often use a reflective or “white” coating to help shoot heat back into the atmosphere, rather than into your home or business, often providing great savings to your energy bill.

In addition, almost any roof can be combined with solar panels to help reduce energy costs and even heat the hot water for your home.
