Santa Ana Winds Tough On Roofs

Santa Ana winds are strong, extremely dry offshore winds that characteristically sweep through Southern California and northern Baja California in late fall and early winter. The winds can range from hot to cold, depending on the prevailing temperatures in the source regions - the Great Basin and upper Mojave Desert. Most often, the winds are known for hot, dry weather (often the hottest of the year) that usher in the Fall and Winter months. In truth, the winds can happen in any season, but most frequently in Fall and Spring. They are also infamous for fanning regional wildfires.

The local weather service will usually wait until wind speeds exceed 28 mph, before calling them Santa Ana winds. Forcing the air through mountain gaps commonly increases the wind speed to 40 mph sustained with gusts of 70 mph, and even reaching 115 mph at times. These kinds of wind speeds can rip the roofing material right off your roof, not to mention fray your nerves.

If you experience high winds, it is a good idea to inspect your for damage and catch small problems before they become big ones. Please note that you should probably have a professional do the inspection. Simply walking on your roof can cause damage.  However, you can inspect your roof visually from the ground using binoculars.
